A special thank you to WXEL-South Florida PBS and Executive Producer: Penelope Douglas Dr. George Ackerman and his wife tell the story of their mother Sharon, her battle with Parkinson’s Disease, and their fight to find a cure.
George Ackerman shares the deeply personal story of his mother, Sharon, and her journey with Parkinson’s disease. Once active and independent, Sharon’s condition gradually progressed from subtle early symptoms to being wheelchair-bound and eventually bedridden.
George reflects on recognizing the first signs of Parkinson’s, the challenges his family faced as the disease advanced, and the lessons he learned as a devoted caregiver. Inspired by his experiences, he wrote A Son’s Journey to raise awareness, offer hope, and support others navigating the realities of Parkinson’s disease.
