An interview with Dr. Phyllis Abel Deal: Fearlessly facing Parkinson’s

Biography

I hold a PhD in sociology and a Masters in Psychology & Counseling

I taught in higher ed for more than 20 years. I am also a woman in long term recovery with more than 4 decades in sobriety.

Can you tell me more about your Advocacy?

I am but a drop in the bucket  for advocacy.  My focus is on helping others Parkinson’s “recipients “ keep their perspective as we all face what is ahead.  I do a modest birthday fundraiser on FB

What is your passion and how did you get involved in Parkinson’s awareness and hope for a cure?

Actually my passion is public speaking with oil painting as a close second.  I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s 5 years ago at the age of 60

What type of goals do individuals with Parkinson’s have when seeing your Advocacy?

Keeping a sense of humor and finding joy in the things we have and can do in spite of Parkinson’s.

What effect can your Advocacy have on an individual with Parkinson’s?

If just one person remembers to laugh, I’m a success.

What would you like to see as a future goal for your Advocacy?

I used to do legislative advocacy work in Texas and some in DC.

What events do you participate in?

I have a front row seat in my life!

How does this also assist the caregivers?

I do hope to educate the patients on compassionate fatigue and how to respect their caregivers

How can someone get in touch?  What is your website?

Email: phearlessly@me.com
How can others also become advocates for awareness?

TikTok!
In your opinion, what is the key to effective advocacy?

Consistently showing up in DC and in home states. Beginners need bulletproof point cheat sheets on how to make appts with legislators and how to speak to them for maximum retention and interest.

How can we better fundraise to support a cure for Parkinson’s?

We don’t need new orgs.  We need to better support the ones we have

What other activities do you undertake to help improve and support your daily living Eg exercise and alternative remedies?

Keep my body moving; stay connected with others; laughter

Why should people who don’t have Parkinson’s care about this? Because they could get a diagnosis themselves or wind up caring for someone else

Have you had any family members or relatives affected by Parkinson’s disease?

Just me!

If you had one song that would tell us more about you or represent your life, which song would it be?

Mary Chapin Carpenter: The Bug

If you had one final statement or quote you could leave for the Parkinson’s community, what would it be?

You’re still alive; remember that!
