An interview with Dora Leonard: Journey of Overcoming Parkinson’s

 

Biography

I was born in Singapore in 1963. My family migrated to America when I was 18 as l started my first year in college. I met my husband in college and got married in 1989. I have 3 grown children now.

 

Please tell me a little about your background.

I just turned 62 and am a retired elementary school teacher. I was diagnosed with PD when l was 50.

 

Can you tell me more about your Advocacy?

My mission is to use how l have lived with PD for the past 12 years as a platform to encourage people not to give up and to keep moving in spite of their challenges. I have experienced the joy of stopping my progression and reversing many of my symptoms just by exercising and having a positive mental attitude. I want to share that to encourage people with PD

 

What is your passion and how did you get involved in Parkinson’s awareness and hope for a cure?

My passion is always about loving others, helping others and encouraging people.

 

What type of goals do individuals with Parkinson’s have when seeing your Advocacy?

To never give and to keep fighting the disease.

What effect can your Advocacy have on an individual with Parkinson’s?

To help them overcome the challenges that comes with having PD

 

What would you like to see as a future goal for your Advocacy?

More people will stop the progression of PD.
What events do you participate in?

World Parkinson Congress, and local events

 

How can others also become advocates for awareness?

Create a social media platform and just tell your story.

What other activities do you undertake to help improve and support your daily living Eg exercise and alternative remedies   

Zumba, boxing, walking, dancing, playing ping pong; pickle ball; tennis and running

Have you had any family members or relatives affected by Parkinson’s disease?

No
