Dr. George Ackerman Appointed to American Parkinson Disease Association Voices of Parkinson’s Council
Advocate commits to advancing support, awareness, and care for the Parkinson’s community

Florida — 4/27/2026 — Dr. George Ackerman, founder of TogetherForSharon® and a dedicated Parkinson’s disease advocate, has been appointed to the Voices of Parkinson’s Council of the American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA). The Council brings together individuals from across the country to amplify the perspectives of people living with Parkinson’s disease and their families, helping guide programs, outreach, and advocacy efforts.

“I am deeply honored to join the Voices of Parkinson’s Council,” said Dr. Ackerman. “APDA has been a constant source of strength for my family. This opportunity allows me to continue honoring my mother, Sharon, while working to ensure that no one facing Parkinson’s ever feels alone.”

Dr. Ackerman’s advocacy is rooted in personal experience. After losing his mother and best friend, Sharon, to Parkinson’s disease, he committed to raising awareness and advancing support for those affected. Through TogetherForSharon®, Dr. Ackerman has worked to elevate community voices, promote education, and advocate for improved care and resources.

During Sharon’s final year, APDA provided critical support to the family, including in-home outreach, access to programs, and compassionate guidance. “Even in our most difficult moments, APDA showed up for us,” Dr. Ackerman added. “That presence and care have stayed with me, and they continue to inspire my commitment to this mission.”

In this new role, Dr. Ackerman’s will collaborate with APDA leadership and fellow Council members to strengthen community engagement, expand access to services, and support initiatives that improve the lives of those living with Parkinson’s disease.

Dr. Ackerman expressed gratitude to APDA leadership, including Leslie A. Chambers, MSPH, President & CEO; Rebecca Gilbert, MD, PhD, Chief Mission Officer; and Rosa M. Peña, MSW, Senior Vice President of Programs & Services, as well as the APDA Florida Chapter, for their continued support and dedication to the Parkinson’s community.

“This is more than an appointment—it is a responsibility and a promise,” said Dr. Ackerman. “Together, we will continue to advance awareness, strengthen support systems, and work toward a future without Parkinson’s disease.”
