New Children’s Book Highlights Family Experiences with Parkinson’s Disease
Taos, N.M. — A new children’s book brings compassion and clarity to families navigating a Parkinson’s disease diagnosis. Written for children ages 3 and up, the story follows the special bond between a grandmother, Sharon and her granddaughter, Brooke, as they face the challenges and emotions that accompany the illness.
Through an accessible, age-appropriate narrative, the book helps young readers understand what Parkinson’s disease may look like in a loved one, as well as the feelings and questions that can arise. By centering the story on love, resilience and connection, the book provides families with a gentle way to begin difficult conversations and foster understanding.
The author, Ackerman, teaches college courses in criminal justice, business and law and has dedicated much of his advocacy work to raising awareness about Parkinson’s disease. In memory of his mother, Sharon Riff Ackerman, he founded TogetherForSharon to promote awareness, education and research aimed at finding a cure.
Ackerman’s outreach efforts include participating in charity events, speaking to community and government organizations, leading caregiving and loss support groups, and interviewing individuals living with Parkinson’s disease, as well as researchers and advocates. His work reflects a commitment to education, empathy and hope for families impacted by the disease.
The author extends his gratitude to the University of New Mexico for its support.
