An interview with Richard Underwood on Advocacy and Rickety Warrior on October 9, 2023 by George Ackerman, Ph.D, J.D.

Biography

I was a consultant program manager in the local government marketplace for over 30 years.
In hindsight, my first sign of Parkinson’s was at 37 when I lost my sense of smell. I was diagnosed in 2018, having developed walking issues. Since that time, I’ve advocated for the condition at every opportunity.

Can you tell me more about your advocacy?

I’m an independent Parkinson’s community advocate, speaker, mentor, research participant and Parkinson’s UK volunteer.

What is your passion and how did you get involved in Parkinson’s awareness and hope for a cure?

To help people make the most of life, despite having Parkinson’s and to bring the condition out from the shadows into the public arena.

What goals do individuals with Parkinson’s have when seeing your advocacy?

Support, friendship, advice, and good practice to move them to a positive take on things.

What effect can your advocacy have on an individual with Parkinson’s?

Positivity, and determination through introduction to other people with the condition and useful resources, with both a local and a global outlook

What would you like to see as a future goal for your advocacy?

I want to like work closer with those in positions of authority to impact the decision-making process of improving Parkinson’s care.

What events do you participate in?

PD-focused presentations In person and on Zoom
Regular international support group meetings
Media interviews on both domestic and international platforms.
Fundraising and awareness events
Focus group participation for both the National Health Service and various research projects.
Involvement in various advertising campaigns for products and services.

How does your advocacy also assist caregivers?

Supporting caregivers is equally important as supporting those with the condition; I do my best to listen, advise and encourage both.

How can others also become advocates for awareness?

To be informed and vocal about an otherwise hidden condition and to support those living with it.

If you had one final statement or quote you could leave for the Parkinson’s community, what would it be?

Remain positive and determined and to do your best every day.
