An Urgent Call to Action! By Dr George Ackerman (Sharon’s Son)
There is an urgent need for PD awareness throughout the law enforcement field and a call to action for the PD community and all citizens nationwide.
I have been in law enforcement, law, and education since 2006. In my experience, there is a lack of awareness of Parkinson’s disease throughout our country. With alarming rates of incidents due to a lack of advocacy and the increase in diagnosis for PD worldwide, this topic needs to be addressed immediately for safety, to decrease potential incidents, and to set those diagnosed at ease when encountering law enforcement at any period.
It is equally as critical for those in all jurisdictions, whether local, state, or federal, interacting with any citizen who has been diagnosed with Pd and their caregivers, caretakers, friends, and family,
Sadly, I cannot reach all police, sheriff departments, and agencies throughout the country, as we need the words “Parkinson’s Disease” added to every single police academy throughout the nation to bring awareness and attention to a serious area that is lacking today. Also added to sworn officer training. Today, most provide training for “dementia and Alzheimer’s,” if at all.
Only through you and this fantastic community can it be done.
One department, agency, city, and state at a time.
I cannot do it alone; however, we can shed light on this critical topic that many are not paying attention to…. Yet
This is an urgent message of the need for more light on this issue….
Thank you, and we advocate for all those battling PD today and their families, as well as access throughout the country because awareness will change the world as a partnership.
